At Melody Living Independent Living in Colorado Springs, we love celebrating the lives, stories, and wisdom of our residents. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Patricia “Pat” Washburn, whose vibrant personality, love for family, and zest for life inspire everyone around her.

A Life Rooted in Care

Pat Gormley (her maiden name) was born on October 10, 1939, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the fifth of eight children. She grew up surrounded by a bustling household of six sisters and two brothers, eventually moving with her family to Oklahoma City at age 16.

Pat dedicated her career to caring for others. As a Registered Nurse, she spent years working as a surgical nurse before transitioning into the field of chemical dependency and psychiatric care, where she made a difference for more than 25 years.

Love, Family, and Adventure

In 1962, Pat married Frank Washburn, an engineer whose career meant frequent relocations. Together, they spent most of their years raising their three children, Amy, Tom, and Jill, in Texas. Frank passed away ten years ago, and at that time, Pat decided to return to Colorado to be closer to her daughters.

Today, Pat’s family remains the center of her world. She is the proud mother of three children, grandmother to six, and great-grandmother to one. Her grandchildren, ages 20–32, keep her connected to new generations, while her two-year-old great-grandson brings boundless joy.

Pat’s Life Companions: Lizzie & Travel

Pat is rarely seen without her beloved terrier mix, Lizzie, an 11-year-old rescue dog. The two are devoted to each other, taking daily walks and sharing companionship that brightens her days.

Over the years, Pat has also traveled extensively, both across the United States and throughout Europe. She recalls Cinque Terre, Italy, as her favorite travel destination, where she enjoyed hiking with friends among breathtaking coastal views. Closer to home, she finds peace and fulfillment in Colorado’s natural beauty, now preferring shorter trips within the state.

Traditions, Hobbies & Holidays

When asked about her favorite holiday, Pat immediately says Halloween. She fondly remembers sewing costumes for her children and watching their excitement as they went trick-or-treating. She looks forward to Halloween festivities at Melody Living, especially the chance to see the children in their costumes.

Her hobbies include working out at the YMCA, daily walks with Lizzie, and staying active. In the past, she enjoyed sewing and creating handmade pieces for her family.

Finding Home at Melody Living

When the time came to choose a Best-in-Class senior living community, Pat knew her priorities: proximity to family, reliable transportation, engaging activities, and a bright, welcoming atmosphere. Melody Living checked every box!

She loves that the community is close to her daughter, appreciates the transportation options, and feels uplifted by the bright, airy design of the community. Her favorite thing so far? The bus trips and activities which give her a chance to stay active, social, and connected.

Looking ahead, Pat says she is most excited about the activities and social opportunities that Melody Living offers.

Words of Wisdom

Pat’s advice to others, “Take advantage of every opportunity to have fun! You never know what life will bring, so live it to its fullest.”.

We’re so grateful to have Pat and her adorable pup, Lizzie, as part of our Melody Living family. Her life of service, love for her family, and warm outlook on life are an inspiration to us all.
